LIBERIA-WEST AFRICA

Liberia is a land full of poverty and disease and yet it is a Beautiful Place full of Natural Resources. There is no running water or electricity for the average Liberian but if you can afford a generator and the fuel to run it, you can have electricity. Since 87% of the population lives in utter poverty, they have learned to live without both.

Liberia is the size of the state of Tennessee (USA)and 47% of her population is made up of children under 18 years of age! Many of the older Liberians have been killed in a 20 year war which ended only recently.

Most women in Liberia can not read or write. Many are plunged into a hard life from birth and end up becoming young unwed Mothers who can not care for their own. The life expectancy for a woman is 41 years of age.

Most men live to be 39 years old and live a life of great suffering. Those who are blessed to have a job often share what they have with their extended family and friends and thereby have created a warm community life where each personslooks out for the other. The man is usually a strong force in the family but many women in Liberia are bold and contribute a great deal to the community and homelife.
